Meet our Horses and our Facilitators

Anneke Gouws

Founder / EAL Facilitator / Equine Specialist

Anneke Gouws, equine specialist at EQuivalence, standing with two horses at the Durbanville facility in the Western Cape.

Nature and animals have always played a central role in my personal well-being. My favorite moments with horses are spent simply sitting in the paddock, observing them. In those moments, I find a space where I can breathe, be present, and feel a sense of belonging. I love sharing these experiences with others, hoping they, too, can discover a sense of freedom in the peace and tranquility that nature provides. There’s something incredibly special about a curious pony approaching someone, gently sniffing their hand, and offering a quiet, “Yes, I am here for you” in that brief, shared connection.

I have trained in various modalities, both locally and internationally, that have shaped who I am and how I guide others. These experiences inform the work I do in our sessions, allowing me to offer a space of support, healing, and growth. I hope to share the essence of EQuivalence with everyone who walks through our gates.

My purpose is to help others feel seen, heard, and understood. EQuivalence is the platform through which I strive to make that possible.

When we are together in the paddock, amidst the herd, I am there to guide, encourage, and hold space for you, until you are ready to step into the world, fulfill your purpose, and reach your potential.

Horse riding facilitator / Equine Bodywork

Horses became a part of our family life when I was about six years old, after my mom started riding as an adult. We lived on a coal mine in the Highveld, practically in the middle of nowhere. From the start, horses have always taught me lessons in humility. They can make you feel like royalty one moment, and in the next, remind you that you’re just another soul in their presence, capable of being humbled in an instant.

They took me from the ground—literally—by dumping me headfirst onto the dirt, filling the air with dust, funny stories, and a few memory lapses along the way. I stopped counting the falls because, over time, it didn’t matter. What mattered was getting back on. And in the next moment, they’d take me soaring, galloping at speeds that still leave me in awe. Horses are my joy, my happiness, my dream.

In August 2016, I joined EQuivalence as a volunteer, and that’s when I truly fell in love with working with children alongside horses. Their smiles and breakthroughs inspire me, especially when they think they can’t, when fear feels all-encompassing—and then, in a moment of courage, they overcome it. I’m there to help them find that “I am…” in their journey.

I strive to inspire a life of mindfulness, where every moment is noticed and the horse, as a sentient being, is celebrated. It’s important to always grow, dream big, and then work to make those dreams a reality.

EQuivalence is the space where I can pass on the invaluable life lessons that horses have taught me—lessons of resilience, trust, and living fully in the present moment.

Lara Seaward

Horsemanship / Horse riding facilitator

Lara Seaward, equine specialist and facilitator at EQuivalence, standing with two horses at the Durbanville farm.

There is nothing better than the feeling of a horse finding their safe space in you.

That kind of connection and trust with such a large and beautiful creature is something words can’t accurately describe. It’s like in all the horse girl movies, but better. That kind of bond between human and horse is what I wish for all my students to experience.

Those moments when a student has been working hard at something and it just clicks are why I do what I do. Helping them achieve their goals and seeing them progress is such a fulfilling thing to do.

Lara Seaward, horsemanship and riding coach at EQuivalence, standing professionally with a horse on the Durbanville farm.

EQuivalence has been a place where I can just breathe amongst the horses (they’re pretty good at reminding you to just take a breath). To be able to share that and teach others to just slow down and live in the moment is something I consider a privilege.

A relationship built on trust between every horse and human is something I love watching flourish. To help facilitate kindness, compassion and understanding in every student is my passion.

Sarah Garland

Clinical Social Worker / Equine Specialist

Sarah Garland, mental health professional and equine specialist at EQuivalence, standing with two horses at the Durbanville facility.

I have loved horses for as long as I can remember—they have always been an integral part of my life. I feel deeply privileged to be able to combine this lifelong passion with my commitment to helping people, integrating horses into my professional work.

I followed my calling to support others by qualifying as a social worker, earning a Master’s degree in Clinical Practice in Social Work. Since 2008, I have gained extensive experience in working with trauma, mental health, and overall wellness. I specialize in equine-assisted therapy, offering psychodynamic and experiential services to youth, adults, couples, individuals, and groups through a ground-based (non-riding) approach. My work is client-centred, solution-oriented, and grounded in narrative practice.

More recently, I completed Advanced Life Coaching and NLP certifications, allowing me to expand my services into personal dynamics coaching with a focus on resilience, motivation, insight, and personal growth.

I am also a trained BWRT (Brain Working Recursive Therapy) practitioner. BWRT is a modern, evidence-informed therapy designed to help people overcome unwanted emotional and behavioural responses quickly and effectively. By working with the brain’s natural processing patterns, BWRT aims to reduce the impact of anxiety, stress, trauma, fears, phobias, low self-confidence, and other limiting patterns—without requiring you to relive distressing experiences in detail. It is a structured, confidential approach focused on creating lasting, positive change.

I offer a tranquil, nature-based space where horses become active partners in the therapeutic process. Through their presence and interaction, they help clients clarify intentions, gain insight, and experience their personal journey in a meaningful and transformative way. I work with a diverse range of clients, including those navigating trauma, anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, personal difficulties, or those simply seeking clarity, balance, and upliftment.

I am deeply passionate about supporting others and take pride in offering a unique, experiential approach that empowers individuals to face challenges and reconnect with their inner strengths. I firmly believe that every person has the capacity to create meaningful and lasting change in their lives.

Client Stories

Experiences with Sarah Garland

"My experience with equine therapy with Sarah Garland and the horses has been deeply transformative. After losing my mother, I felt consumed by grief, but Sarah together with the horses created a safe and nurturing space where I could simply be. Her calm presence and the gentle way she explained the healing process helped me understand that it’s okay to feel what I feel. Working alongside the horses brought a sense of peace and grounding that words can hardly capture. Through breathing, connecting, and allowing myself to let go, I found comfort and relief in knowing that healing is possible. If you are navigating grief or simply seeking a deeper connection with yourself, this process is something I would wholeheartedly recommend. This is where the magic happens."

Hanri SmitSnyman Equine Therapy Client

"I have really enjoyed equine therapy with Sarah. It has helped me immensely to become better at dealing with the many challenges that come with being a teenager. I have found that I connect really well with the horses and Sarah, in a way that traditional therapy hasn't let me. I find that I work through my emotions much better in an environment where I can be outside and with animals. In the few months that I have been going to equine therapy, my family and I have noticed a difference in my demeanor and how I face the world."

Our Equine Team

Our equine team is a diverse group, each horse bringing their uniqueness to the work we do. They are sentient, intuitive, playful, non-judgmental beings whose honesty and presence are central to everything we offer. Horses have an extraordinary ability to connect with people on a deep, non-verbal level, helping us understand what may be left unspoken, bringing truth to the surface, and offering valuable insights into our emotional and mental states.
Our horses don’t just offer therapy—they teach us, guide us, and show us different paths toward self-awareness and transformation. Together, they are a vital part of the healing journey, allowing us to reconnect with ourselves and the world around us.

Horses' Heightened Senses

Horses’ heightened senses allow them to perceive things beyond human comprehension. They can detect another being’s heartbeat from up to 1.5 meters away, and it is scientifically proven that they can co-regulate their heartbeats with humans to create a balanced state of harmony. This ability to track autonomic nervous systems means that horses are uniquely capable of helping individuals become more attuned to their own emotional and physiological states. By bringing awareness to our inner worlds, they guide us toward new ways of being, helping us find equilibrium and healing.
